Okinawan Martial Arts Academy is a traditional Shuri-ryu Karate dojo located in Morris, Illinois. Our Sensei is Gary Gillette, 5th Dan. Shuri-ryu is an eclectic form of martial arts which incorporates traditional karate kicks, strikes and blocks with grappling, joint locks, restraints, vital point strikes, throws and weapons training. The Shuri system originated in Okinawa several hundred years ago and was passed on from generation to generation until brought to the United States by O'sensei Robert Trias (deceased) considered to by the father of karate in the United States.
Emphasis is placed on Technique--punches, kicks, blocks and stances; Kumite (sparring or fighting); Kata--a formalized sequence of moves, blocks and punches against a number of imagined attackers; Waza--ippons, kihons and taezus which are short sequences of moves defending against a single attacker; and finally, Self-defense. In addition, there is specialized training in traditional Okinawan kobudo (weapons) including Bo staff, Nunchakus, Sais, Kama, Eiku and Tonfa.

Instructors:
Mr. Gary Gillette is a 5th degree black belt who trains under Hanshi John Venson in Chicago. He has been involved in karate for approximately 25 years.
Ms. Terri Gillette is a 3rd degree black belt who also trains under Hanshi John Venson.

The Okinawan Martial Arts Academy is affiliated with the International Shuri-Ryu Association.

Students as young as 5 years of age through adult are accepted.
Classes are Monday and Thursday nights from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm for beginning children and Monday and Thursday nights from 6:00 to 7:30 pm for advanced children and adults.
